In a second paper, published in Psychological Science, we investigated how rapidly speech intelligibility improves when a novel voice is trained to become familiar. Yougo slower which is quite nice! It is thought to be a historically significant document due to Emma's in-depth accounting of events occurring during the American Civil War. This year, I gave two talks and co-moderated a podium session, so the conference was even busier than usual! Participants received a greater improvement in speech inteligibility, and similar reduction in listening effort, when they listened to sentences preceeded by a same-topic than different-topic sentence. I had no stamina. Perhaps, familiarity with particular timbres helps people to perform other tasks, but our results imply it doesnt help with pitch discrimination. Our new paper in Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics is now available online. Im looking forward to meeting everyone at the MPI and giving my talk tomorrow in a session on models of cognition. Unlike classic RSA approaches, this paper describes a method for using standard variational inference procedures to quantify the contributions of particular patterns to the data. Familiar voices are more intelligible, even if they are not recognized as familiar. Adults, but not children, showed preparatory EEG activity when they were cued to gender. The conference agenda and a searchable list of abstracts are available online. Magazine
We caught up with her the day after shed run the Lydd 20 to find out more about her running, and how she mixes modelling and marathons. doi:10.1037/xlm0000823, Im on my way to San Jose, CA, for the 2020 ARO Mid-Winter Meeting. WebGoldstein Emma Holmes Report Page 3 took Cohn up on his offer to partner following his presentation to all Orange County superintendents. Furthermore, even when explicit recognition of familiar voices was eliminated, they were still more intelligible than unfamiliar voicesdemonstrating that familiar voices do not need to be explicitly recognized to benefit intelligibility. I was 19. Holmes was known throughout the series for her "big personality", which she admits can sometimes "get me in trouble" - traits that certainly didn't deter her famous mentor. Web257 Followers, 386 Following, 128 Posts - See Instagram photos and videos from Emma Holmes (@emmer_emmz) Speech spoken by familiar people is more resistant to interference by linguistically similar speech. Noor simulated how different types of lesions affect word repetition performance (i.e., repeating heard words). Ive doneit for the last two years, its brilliant. [Epub ahead of print]. These stimuli consist of rapidly presented chords of pure tones. Segmentations are disambiguated via lexical priors. WebThe most famous modelling competition on TV has taken its final steps, and the statuesque winner of this years season is half Jamaican, half Dutch, Emma Holmes. Speech-in-noise detection is related to auditory working memory precision for frequency. The second reason is differences in grouping sounds. Overall, these simulations reveal that functional recovery after brain damage depends on the availability of computational and structural resources. Emma Holmes crowned winner of the Face by mentor, Naomi Campbell, Modelling Castings, Go Sees and Callbacks, Ways to break into modelling with Neon Models, How to walk the catwalk a guide by Neon Models. EEG activity evoked in preparation for multi-talker listening by adults and children. Interestingly, recognition of all three of the trained voices was significantly above chance, and was no better for talkers that had been trained for longer. doi:10.1016/j.heares.2017.05.005. We also use the model to synthesise expected neuronal responses. Empirically, this would be interpreted as theta-gamma coupling. If you want to read more about the experiment, heres the paper: Holmes, E., Kitterick, P. T. & Summerfield, A. Q. This is my first BSA meeting since I returned to the UK. try { I started modelling after I was in New York in the toilets of a cafe and someone followed me in and asked if I was a model. We show that mismatch responses (e.g., MMN) emerge from this framework. Johan Carlins talk was also very insightful, showing how differences in mean activity can influence the structure of multi-dimensional scaling output in surprising ways. "Keep your head down and work hard - I didn't keep my head down, but I did work hard. Tomorrow, Ill be giving a talk at the UCL Speech Sciences Forum. Hearing Research, 350, 160172. Functional neuroimaging data are usually multivariatefor example, comprising measurements of brain activity at multiple (MRI) voxels or (MEG/EEG/ECoG) channels. "The show was pretty intense," she admitted. Yesterday, I shared some code that I wrote to generate videos, which I have used to standardise speech recordings. Association for Research in Otolaryngology (ARO), Brain and Mind Institute Postdoctoral Collaborative Research Grants, summary of my 2016 Hearing Research paper, Frequency Following Response (FFR) workshop. "When we saw the catwalk we were absolutely convinced Emma was the This process might help us to combine foreground elements, like speech, over seconds to help separate them from the background of an auditory scene (e.g., noise or other peoples conversations). The summit was held at High Leigh Conference Centre in Hoddeston, which turned out to be a very scenic (and sunny) location. She showed a general segregation deficit, displaying atypical performance for words-in-noise, music streaming, and figure-ground perceptiondespite intact peripheral function, working memory, and recognition of familiar melodies. Overall, this framework generates quantitative (testable) predictions for behaviour and neural responses, using processes not specific to speech recognition. Ready for some behind the scenes action? Griffiths, T. D., Lad, M., Kumar, S., Holmes, E., McMurray, B., Maguire, E. A., Billig, A. J., & Sedley, W. (2020). I enjoyed talking to Victoria about our research. Emma Holmes is a digital fundraising and engagement associate. Designed and built by Bopgun. Casting Director

While the model could develop resistance to insult, the effects of damage could not be overcome beyond a certain point, leading to persistent impairments. This International Womens Day, Im feeling grateful for all the amazing female mentors Ive had, who have given me advice, confidence, and support over the years. Im delighted to announce that Ive been awarded a Pauline Ashley Fellowship from Action in Hearing Loss. I just thought about how much I had to learn from her and how much she knew that I didn't". Tomorrow, Ill be presenting some new results from my RNID-funded project, which examines how age and audiometric thresholds affect spatial attention. There was an exciting program of talks and lots of great opportunities for discussion! If familiarity with timbre improves pitch discrimination, we should have found the best performance for natural instrument timbres. I remember standing there underwear thinking, 'I am standing in a room wearing only underwear in a room full of supermodels.' I presented my research plan for my fellowship to staff and supporters, which led to some really engaging discussions. Simulating lesion-dependent functional recovery mechanisms. Adults and children were able to use visual instructive cues for spatial location (left/right) and gender (male/female) to select words spoken by the target talker. I also enjoyed Cai Wingfields talk, where he described some studies combining automatic speech recognition approaches with M/EEG data recorded while participants listened to spoken words (for more information, see their paper). This effect was strongest at intermediate levels of the auditory cortical hierarchy: left posterior STG, MTG, and planum temporale. Canadian Audiologist, 5(6). Im looking forward to my new role, and building my group here. It was my first time at Psychonomics and I presented some of my new work on familiar voices. Im very grateful to have received a Women in Cognitive Science Travel and Networking Award to attend. The aim of the computition is to convey your research in less than three minutes and engage an audience of non-specialistswith only one PowerPoint slide allowed! Specifically, we aimed to examine two findings from empirical studies: first, reaction times for reporting words on the cued side improve when the cue is presented longer in advance; second, spatial cueing is associated with a ramping of EEG activity, resembling the contingent negative variation (CNV), before the speech begins. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied. Please log in with your email address and password below: Forgotten your password or need a new one? In our new paper, published in Nature Scientific Reports, we show this difficulty can be caused by several factors. Womens Running may earn commission from the links on this page, but we only ever share brands that we love and trust. In our new perspective piece, we consider the directionality of this effect and possible brain bases for the link. The paper can be viewed online here. Emma even carries around the notebook Campbell gave her to detail all her advice close to hand as she's worried "Naomi's going to call me and ask, 'Have you got it?!'". We first created a generative model under which a synthetic agent could perform the task accurately. Next week, Ill be appearing on CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation)stay tuned for details! It wasnt Emmas first foray into modelling, she had already had some experience with catwalk and advertising. WebEnter lightbox code. This paper introduces variational RSA, a new multivariate approach. Max Factor make-up artist Caroline Barnes said:When we saw the catwalk we were absolutely convinced that Emma was the best. But my modeling didnt start then I went to university and then took it up full time when I finished my degree at 21. found running really hard at first. My running coach, who took me from a complete beginner up to marathons, didnt want to do all the long-distance stuff because shes not training for a marathon herself, so she approached my friend Emily and me to see if we would consider being running coaches. If modeling doesn't work out for her, her mum has told her that she will have to go back to university and focus on her studies and that she only has a year to become a model. Holmes, E., Zeidman, P., Friston, K. J., & Griffiths, T. D. (2021). The tests may be particularly helpful for predicting hearing outcomes in populations who cannot be tested with language (e.g., young children, or people who are not fluent in the language that is spoken in their clinic). Both adults and children showed preparatory EEG activity very soon (< 50 ms) after they were cued to the spatial location of a target talker. At Womens Running, were proud of the fact that we use real runners on our covers. They assess peoples ability to group a pattern of tones against a background of random tones, which is relevant to understanding speech in noisy settings. The 18-year old beauty We looked at the amount that two maskers needed to be symmetrically separated (in the azimuth plane) from a target voice for it to be as intelligible as a familiar voice with collocated maskers. We then adjusted the model to investigate hypotheses about preparatory attention. She brings something different and fresh to Max Factor. We couldnt agree more and expect great things from the lovely Emma. SIGN UP TO OUR NEWSLETTER FOR EXCLUSIVE FEATURES, RECIPES AND COMPETITIONS. In the same session, I talked about some of my recent work on the voice cues that enable us to understand and recognise speech spoken by familiar talkers (such as a good friend or partner). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neubiorev.2021.09.038. As usual, the conference was packed with interesting research and it was difficult to see everything in the time available! Instead, we found musicians had better thresholds for artificial flat-spectrum complex tones (and no difference among timbres for non-musicians). I formed a committee to review the applications and was also involved in reviewing the applications myself. With three marathons and an ultra on her running CV, Emma also volunteers as a Run Leader around her hometown of Sevenoaks, Kent. (2021). _g1.classList.remove('lazyload'); Our new paperVariational representational similarity analysisis now available online at Neuroimage. I dontlike the 5K and 10Ks, I like going longer and slower. This suggests the pattern of fMRI responses in these areas reflects the benefit to intelligibility rather than familiarity per se. We hope that this paper will be a useful starting point for researchers who wish to examine this link empirically. Some people find it difficult because they struggle to group sounds that remain the same frequency over time (first set of examples in the YouTube video), whereas other people find it difficult because they struggle to track sounds that change frequency (second set of examples in the YouTube video). Simultaneous auditory agnosia: Systematic description of a new type of auditory segregation deficit following a right hemisphere lesion. Hope to see you there! We hope that our tests might be useful in the future for assessing this type of difficulty, which is not well assessed by current clinical tests. One of my ongoing research projects was featured in a recent newsletter of the Music Learning Across the Lifespan (MLAL) group of Western University. In other words, what characteristics of someones voice do we rely on to better understand speech spoken by familiar people? Today, I entered the Three Minute Research competition for postdocs at Western University. Looking forward to seeing many of you there. I particularly enjoyed talks by Matthew Winn (Speech perception with a cochlear implant: Percent-correct scores do not explain listening effort) and Lori Holt (Supervised error-driven learning in speech perception) and a symposium on Age-Related Plasticity Changes in the Central Auditory System. The 18-year old beauty was picked out by Max Factor judges Caroline Barnes and Scott Bradley for her unique beauty and similarities to Mr Max Factors original 1920s muse, Marlene Dietrich. We used a novel paradigm that tests auditory working memory for non-speech sounds that vary in frequency and amplitude modulation rate. Both papers address the problem of how we understand what someones saying in noisy places, such as cafes, restaurants, and pubs. EMMA HOLMES has been crowned the winner of Naomi Campbell's model talent show, The Face - and, perhaps unsurprisingly, she was on the supermodel's team. It wasnt Im looking forward to catching up with old colleagues and presenting a talk on my new work: Normal hearing thresholds and figure-ground perception explain significant variability in speech-in-noise performance. In our paper, we consider speech recognition as a Bayesian inference problem (based on active inference). Most previous experiments investigating endogenous visual and/or auditory attention have not tested cue-target intervals as long as 2 seconds, yet we found a significant improvement in performance between cue-target intervals of 1 and 2 seconds. Im looking forward to presenting some new unpublished data, and catching up with colleagues. If this sounds like something that might interest you, feel free to check out my poster (#94), 3-minute digest, or come and talk to me at the virtual poster session on Friday 22nd at 11:1512:15 EDT (4:155:15pm UK time). The project will delve deeper into the benefits of training a voice to become familiar, following on from some research I did in collaboration with Ingrid Johnsrude (Holmes, To & Johnsrude, 2021). If youd like to read more about the science behind our figure-ground tests, you can find some of our relevant papers here: Recently, we had the rare opportunity to study a young patient who experienced a stroke, which affected the right hemisphere of her brain. Generative models, linguistic communication and active inference. If it's easier, just call us:
One reason is that there is large variability in clinical test results, even among people whose hearing is in the range that is widely considered to reflect normal hearing. These grants are a new initiative by the Brain and Mind Institute to promote collaboration between different labs and give postdocs the opportunity to carry out independent research projects. For example, Ive made available the code I wrote to calculate Phase Coherence and an analysis method I developed for estimating the dissimilarity in source locations between two conditions (termed Source Dissimilarity Index). Ive never been on a diet I guess Im lucky but apart from when I had my children, Ive always been this weight. Lecturer, UCL. She attended The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. After a long journey (that ended up re-routed via Finland), Ive arrived in Leipzig for the IMPRS NeuroCom Summer School. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neubiorev.2020.07.005. The results showed that complete damage to the premorbid system engaged the alternative system, which led to an initial drop in performance, but this recovered relatively quickly. To isolate attentional processing from peripheral acoustic processing, we measured electro-encephalography (EEG) when participants prepared their attention for an upcoming talker. The Court Shoe Is Cool Again, Shop The 10 Key Spring/Summer 2023 Trends To Know Now. The group has funded collaborative pilot studies and I was very grateful to recieve funding as a Prinicipal Investigator to carry out a project in collaboration with the Don Wright Faculty of Music at the end of last year. Holmes, E., & Herrmann, B. It doesnt ask questions that have already been answered by its previous questions. We are also considering training approaches that might help to improve listening in noisy places. Sounds that reach our ears are continuous and overlapping. We conducted a wide range of tests, including discrimination of basic acoustic features, more complex scene analysis, and tests involving overlapping sounds. Nature Scientific Reports, 9, 16771. doi:10.1038/s41598-019-53353-5, Weve created some new auditory figure-ground stimuli, which we tested in listeners with normal hearing. But she said she didn't want to model because it wasn't challenging enough. In our new paper, we tested the hypothesis that some of this variability relates to a general ability to hold sounds in mind, (i.e., auditory working memory) even when the sounds arent speech. Moreover, we found the largest benefit of a familiar voice when one other person was speaking a sentence from the same language at the same time. The project is a collaboration between researchers at the Brain and Mind Institute and at the Don Wright Faculty of Music. Half-Dutch and half-Jamaican, Holmes entered the competition after a friend urged her to give it a try. Holmes, E., & Johnsrude, I. S. (2020). "It's weird because when someone is that iconic, you have so much respect and admiration for them - and that sometimes gets misinterpreted as fear. Hearing Research, 336, 83100. We found the benefit of a familiar voice was significantly smaller when the other person was speaking a different language that the listener could not comprehend. You can attend any of the events for free by registering on the website: https://www.pintofscience.ca/london-2017. Tonight, Ill be interviewed by Jess Brady about our new paper on voice training on Canadian radio station AM 980. We, therefore, think these impairments in auditory segregation are related to damage to non-primary auditory cortex including planum temporale, which has been implicated in auditory segregation in previous imaging studies.
