He is an excellent route-runner, excellent (and prolific) at selling fakes, and has elite change-of-direction ability to shake DBs loose in order to get open or break tackles. Dallas Goedert was likened to Zach Ertz even before the draft. [6:10] Tate lines up outside and runs an out route, changing direction uphill immediately after the catch so quickly that Stroman whiffs on his tackle and Tate gets tons of YAC. [8:53] This is the danger Jeffery can present going deep. [1:17] Arcegna-Whiteside makes a great fake outside to over-commit the CB, then uses quick feet to explode inside and get great initial separation. [9:35] Gilmore again lines up opposite Slayton at the top of the screen. Check out the NFC West's top 10 receivers. But forcing him to start so far off essentially gives Slayton a running start as he passes Darby. He was traded to the Cowboys in the middle of last season (the 4th year of his rookie contract) for a 1st round pick in 2019 draft, and Cooper had an immediate impact, seemingly jump-starting the Cowboys offense and helping them to a division championship. Neither WR got consistent separation against those CBs, but McLaurin was harder to jam and had stronger hands wrestling away 50/50 balls. One of the first things a receiver needs to do at the NFL level is to win against outstanding press man coverage. This play shows excellent route running ability, strength, and effort, though it would be nice if he trusted his hands enough to make the catch without using his body to corral the ball. Of course, no position group consists of just one star player. His basketball roots are also evident on plays like this. * 21+ (19+ CA-ONT) (18+ NH/WY). The $20 million receiver barely squeezes past Washington Football Team's 2nd year star receiver Terry McLaurin. Thats insane. NFL Wide Receivers 2021 : For a division that is considered one of the weakest in the history of the NFL, the NFC East boasts one of the best receiving groups in the whole league. Your login session has expired. He is also a much tougher and higher-effort player than I had previously realized, able to hang on to make contested catches, and often reaching forward after contact to gain a few extra yards. Cooper again runs down the sideline and seems to get open by selling the deep route, but breaking it back to shake loose. Darby is a much better (and faster) CB than Douglas and runs with McLaurin down the sideline, but Terry turns back at just the right time, quickly locates the ball in the air, tracks it, and reaches out to make a very tough contested catch. NFL footage NFL Productions LLC. 0 Comment. Golden Tate has consistently been one of the NFLs most underrated WRs. 300 routes run). Gilmore is on top of him the whole way and cuts back just as hard as Slayton, wrapping him up as the ball gets to him and knocking the ball away. The Washington Football Team stands at 72.6 inches, or 6'1". In the video I reviewed of Cooper (all after the trade to the Cowboys), he looked like a very good WR, just one step down from elite (not quite a Julio Jones or Antonio Brown). These traits were evident in his game tape as well; he plays more fast than quick, and uses physicality or deep speed to get open more often than agility. It would have made more sense for Darby to press Slayton at the line, disrupt his route, then run with him and have the other DB start further back to act as insurance if Darby gets beat. Dak breaks to his right (Coopers side) almost immediately after the snap despite little pressure and is looking for Cooper the whole time. In his college tape, he almost always corralled balls into his body after getting several feet of separation from DBs. This play shows again that McLaurin has more ways to win than just speed, and even against the best of CBs, he found a way to get open through physicality, smart positioning, and excellent route running and timing. This play highlights Richardsons deep threat ability, change-of-direction, ball tracking, body positioning, leaping ability, and strong hands at the catch point. The only reason I put him below elite is that he rarely faced double teams, but was neutralized by them when he did. Kupp averaged nine receptions and 101.6 receiving yards per game in the eight contests he started and finished this season, providing a bright spot for a Rams offense that has struggled all year. [1:52] Slayton lines up bottom of screen on the outside. [4:15] This is a well designed and executed pick play where Richardson springs Vernon Davis open for a huge gain. At the Combine, he had posted a very good 4.42s 40-yard dash (showing good deep speed), but also produced an elite 6.71s 3-cone drill (agility), and 3.98s 20 yard shuttle (acceleration). Second, this is clearly a play designed to get the ball to Alshon Jeffery in the red zone. Here, well take a look at the top of the depth chart for each team the pool of players from which the ones on the final 53 seem likely to be chosen. He built on that success his sophomore year in 2018, with 72 receptions for 1,061 yards. Instead of taking a step back, Hill has elevated an entire offense and been the key to third-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's breakout season. What follows is the BBV discussion of what scouts look for in running back prospects. Of the players I reviewed last year for the Ranking the NFCE series, my opinion on Cooper is that he is among the least changed. It depends on whether you favor production or efficiency on who wins out. Jhabvala didn't specify when the interview was taking place, but the team was expected to . [7:06] Very clever play design by Doug Pederson. This play showcases McLaurins sense of timing (looks back just as the ball should be arriving, making it tough for Darby to react in time), toughness, contested catch ability, body control, and situational awareness (to stay in bounds). An argument can be made he is the third best receiver in the NFC East. NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah joined Chris Brown and Steve Tasker on One Bills Live from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. That might not sound like a compliment, but it is intended as such, as I consider Julio the best WR in the NFL. Giving him an easy pass like this and clearing his way also makes things easy on their freshman QB. This steep drop-off is no surprise, but it does influence the total number of age 30+ wide receivers who hit 100 targets in a season. Jeffery plays with more speed than JJ, but JJ plays with more strength and has less of an injury history. Alshon Jeffery was taken by the Bears in the 2nd round of the 2012 draft. They have the No. McLaurin seems to try to fake outside, but Slay doesnt bite, instead following McLaurin as he releases inside. Each week of the 2022 NFL season, the Next Gen Stats analytics team will present a different Position Power Ranking meant to spotlight the top performances among a specific group of players. NFC East Positional overview. Gambling problem? In a sport that is as physically demanding as football, one in which player injuries are common, the unit depth is as important a factor as the skill of the star players. However, he also ended this play with a mistake I saw him make a few other times too by slipping and falling without contact. This season, the division is up for grabs yet again. The more I learn about certain recent Eagles draft picks, the more it seems like they are perfect long-term replacements for some of the star players on the Eagles roster. 1 receiver out of the gate. [1:05] Tate lines up in the slot on a crossing route, but sees the play break down as Wentz breaks the pocket and changes directions so quickly that CB Greg Stroman slips on the grass trying to cover him. He has surprising physicality for his size, often fighting through contact on a contested catch to get extra yards. Then he shows good awareness of the defense in sprinting away from defenders to get the long TD. Meanwhile, the veteran wideout has scored a league-high eight touchdowns on deep targets for his new team, two more than any other player. He shows enough effort and skill in route running that I think he will develop into a capable NFL starter under good coaching, but I think his immediate value will be on special teams, where he already has the ability to make an impact. But against NFL-caliber talent, it might not be enough. Ranking the NFC East, 2020: Wide Receivers, Jeff Bezos and Josh Harris are the two finalists to buy the Washington Commanders; NFL owners will discuss Dan Snyder after new reports, Washington players call out Dan Snyders terrible facilities, staff in new NFLPA survey, Grade Ron Rivera After His First Three Seasons in Washington, ESPN has the details on the investigation of Dan Snyder for financial crimes, and its time for him to sell the team, News, links to articles, updates and more from DC area writers and national sports journalists and others, Looks Like Someone Has A Sixpack Of The Mondays, Yahoo Washington Football Team Depth Chart, Yahoo Washington Football Team Transactions, the BBV discussion of what scouts look for in running back prospects, TCU @ Oklahoma State, all Jalen Reagor plays, The Commanders Should Consider Jose Ramirez as a Developmental Edge Rusher, Martin Mayhew NFL Scouting Combine Presser, 2023 NFL Mock Draft Roundup: Mel Kiper Jr gives Washington a big offensive lineman. Jeffery is just a bit less gifted in each of these areas than an elite player like Julio Jones, and isnt really elite in any area. Wide receiver Kenny Golladay's time with the Giants is reportedly coming to an end.Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Giants will cut Golladay when the new league year begins on March 15. It depends on whether you favor production or . That is a difficult habit to unlearn at this point in his development, though I saw enough hands catches to think he can develop. [0:01] Reagor shifts from the left slot to right boundary, helping his QB to diagnose zone coverage because the slot CB doesnt travel with him. Buy Chargers Tickets. Like Julio, Jeffery is tall, long-limbed, physical, fast, and a good route runner. Jose Joaquin (JJ) Arcega-Whiteside was born in Spain, the child of two professional basketball players. After watching both WRs in those matchups, I think the difference was McLaurins physicality and ability to win contested catches. This play showcases his deep speed and big play ability, but also his ability to locate the ball and adjust to the throw. With Amari Cooper off to Cleveland, and James Washington and Michael Gallup dealing with injuries this season, the window has been there for Lamb to step up, and hes done so with flying colors to help Dallas to its 10-3 start. The Cowboys receivers may have the most talent and productivity potential of any group in the NFC East, but, with the Cowboys' run-centered offense, and Dak Prescott 's limited pass production . Lattimore is so fast that he closes in for a tackle as soon as the ball arrives, but Cooper does a great job making the catch through contact and keeping his feet in bounds for the reception. He primarily uses a combination of route running, short-area quickness, and savvy (with fakes/misdirection and ability to find the soft spot in zones) to get open and make plays. Hes a high effort blocker, but his technique and power are below average. JJ has an extensive bag of tricks, using good fakes and foot quickness to get open at the release and good body positioning to make tough, contested catches. First, as much as Jim Schwartzs defense makes life difficult for the CBs, Doug Pedersons offense makes like easier for the WRs. Richardson is very much a team player, and will always do his part in a play, even if the ball isnt going his way. Reagor has weaknesses though. With Dak Prescott healthy, this offense could be fun to watch. This is an example of the trouble Cooper has when facing off against top CBs who are as athletically gifted as he is and arent afraid of getting beat deep. The one guy you dont have to worry about is Ward. 0 Rate. [3:05] This was the play that introduced McLaurin to a lot of us. He has NFL bloodlines as his father, Paul Richardson, played several years as an NFL wide receiver as well. Love was smart enough to avoid being fooled by the route, allowing little separation and having enough physicality to prevent getting boxed out. Hard to tell. This was a 37 yard play. He even manages to keep his feet in bounds when he lands despite a shove by Darby, showing excellent body control and awareness. [3:49] This time, Love wins the matchup, getting a hand in to break up the pass. The Packers' offense has faltered for most of the season without Adams to create explosive plays. [0:38] McLaurin does a good job blocking on this play, eventually blocking his guy to the ground. Oh, and adding CeeDee Lamb to the mix certainly does not hurt. In his rookie year in the NFL, he did an excellent job reaching out and catching the ball away from his body (hands-catching), which is critical to keep the ball safe from DBs that rarely allow as much separation as in college. This is a play that could have benefited from a fake inside before starting the route though, and notice this is again a body catch. Five-time Pro Bowl receiver Keenan Allen could be a surprise cut this offseason with the Los Angeles Chargers sitting at $19.9 million over the salary cap.It was a luxury to have both Allen and Mike Williams on the same team, but the time might have finally arrived for the Chargers to settle in with one player being the No. Cooper is one of the best in the NFL at building up speed on the route stem as if hes going to go deep, then stopping on a dime and cutting in a different direction so suddenly that the DB is backing up several feet away before he realizes hes out of position. He will put that analytical brain to work this off-season helping to analyze some of the top players in the NFC East. Justin Jefferson can lay claim to the title of being the best receiver in the NFL. The NFC East was a historically bad division in 2020, which is why all four teams were in the race deep into the season. Cooper did a poor job on the few plays I saw him used as a blocker, and seemed to get pulled from the field by the coaching staff on many running plays. This was a poorly placed ball it should have been lower and inside to make it harder to intercept and easier to catch but Reagor did a great job tracking the ball and adjusting (leaping) to the high throw to bail out his QB. This shows how much the Cowboys trust Cooper to be a red zone weapon. Then Richardson makes a great leaping catch, highpointing the ball and securing it at maximum extension away from the DB. It should be extremely worrying when Daniel Jones is the only guaranteed player who will start for their franchise next season. [1:32] This is an example of being open when covered. Washington Football Team Terry McLaurin has solidified himself as one of the best young receivers in the NFL. McLaurin is an extremely willing and tough blocker, even if his technique could use some work, and is generally willing to do the dirty work necessary to help his team succeed. His routes are smooth and fluid, and once he turned on his jets near the endzone, the safety couldnt keep up. Tate is a good route runner, an extremely reliable catcher (2nd fewest drops among WRs in 2018), and most importantly is one of the NFLs best WRs at getting yards after catch (YAC). It also highlights his ability to get open on crossing and out routes because CBs have to guard against the deeper routes so diligently. Watching tape of McLaurins 2019 season, it became clear that other teams saw him as the number one threat in the Redskins passing game. However, this is all based on his rookie year alone, and he is still developing. Slayton tested extremely well at the 2018 NFL Combine, posting good size (61 and 190 pounds), explosiveness (vertical and broad jump), and speed (4.39 second 40 yard dash). Since joining Josh Allen and the Bills, Diggs leads the NFL with 2,953 receiving yards when aligned wide, and his 1,077 yards on hitch routes over that span are 370 more than the next-closest player (Tyler Lockett, 707). He was on a torrid pace yet again when healthy. PanthersWire. AZ, CO, CT, IL, IN, IA, KS, LA, (select parishes), MD, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, TN, VA, WV, WY, CA-ONT only.Eligibility restrictions apply. Unlike many other speedy WRs, McLaurin is tough and physical enough to support the run game. It could happen, but it requires a lot of things to go right for Washington that didnt go right in 2018. This play highlights Coopers ability to sell the deep route as well as his short area quickness to stop and turn on a dime to get open. Slayton then quickly runs away from the FS Rodney McLeod, easily outpacing him to the endzone. [2:38] Reagor does a good job as he approaches the CB of faking inside with his head and shoulders and planting his left leg inside, getting the CB to flip his hips inside. As an aside, I think this play also highlights problems with how the Eagles scheme up their secondary. In particular, Lamb has been lethal when going in a shift or motion, leading the NFL with both 337 receiving yards and 4 receiving TDs on such snaps this season. NFL+ gives you the freedom to watch LIVE out-of-market preseason games, LIVE local and primetime regular season and postseason games on your phone or tablet, the best NFL programming on-demand, and MORE! Not many teams can present such a matchup, but the NFCE faced two such DBs last year in Darius Slay and Stephon Gilmore, each shadowing Cooper in their respective games. To say a wide receiver is a great Route Runner means a lot of different things and there are a wide variety of routes that are run, some of which accentuate different skill sets. Just a few years ago, the NFC East was chock-full of high profile wide receivers. CD Lamb is the best Wide Receiver in the NFC East . Paul Richardson Jr was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2014 NFL draft. Despite having plenty of separation, McLaurin extends his hands to catch away from his body, showing better form than the hands-catching I noted in his college tape. NFC East The AFC East probably has two receivers who are currently better than anyone in this division. Giants: Darius Slayton, Kenny Golladay, John Ross III, Sterling Shepard, Kadarius Toney. CB #21 (Ronald Darby) looked fast enough to run with Slayton and almost caught him at the end. The Cowboys 2018 season turned around completely when they traded for Amari Cooper, who, playing in his 5th year option season in 2019, is in a contract year and looking to get paid going forward. [1:45] Cooper does a great job seeming to run deep and selling a slant route inside. At 61 and 211 lbs, he also has very good (though not elite) size for a WR. At the quarter mark of the 2022 NFL season, the Next Gen Stats analytics team ranks the top 10 defensive lines. SB Nation CFB. Brown has been dominant on tight-window throws this season, with a career-high 273 yards on such targets (second in the NFL behind George Pickens). He is also an ace gunner on special teams and the Skins reportedly had him ranked as the number 1 ranked special teams player in the draft. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside does an excellent job using his size, strength, and body positioning to box out CBs and make contested catches (making him a big red zone threat). Look at the difference in cushion the Eagles give him vs the other boundary WR at the top of the screen! Note, however, that he didnt make the big play by simply running past everyone with deep speed, but, rather, by using his sudden acceleration and route running ability to get open, and then using his agility to break tackles until the defenders were left behind. Up today: Receivers 1. Chicago Bears. [0:41] This is almost a mirror of the first play shown above against the Vikings. However, JJ has tremendous ability to stay open even when covered, using his big body, long arms, and good hands-catching ability to reach out and grab the ball out of the CBs reach, even with very little separation. . The Redskins probably have the least recognizable names in the division, even though the squad features former first round pick Josh Doctson and last years relatively high-profile free agent signing, Paul Richardson. The following browsers are supported: Chrome, Edge (v80 and later), Firefox and Safari. McLaurin runs to the DBs outside shoulder, knowing that this will give him outside leverage when he eventually breaks out on his route. [3:34] Reagor again goes deep, this time going inside (maintaining early inside leverage against the boundary CB), then outside a little later (maintaining outside leverage against the deep safety). The Redskins seem to have a very high-quality group on the field, though the only well-known name in the bunch is Terry McLaurin, and his fame doesnt extend far beyond the fantasy football communityyet. [2:35] Richardson lines up outside (bottom of screen) behind the line of scrimmage. The Dallas Cowboys rookie taken 17th overall in the 2020 NFL draft looks like a bona fide future star and may emerge as the divisions best weapon sooner rather than later. [1:46] This play is one of two that is very representative of how Cooper gets open. As miserable as that 2020 season was for the Cowboys, he still had 92/1,114/5. On the plus side, defenses respect his deep threat ability so much that opposing CBs often backed up away from the line themselves, where they were not in a position to jam him. He is a capable deep threat, not quite as fast as DeSean Jackson or Terry McLaurin, but fast enough to break big plays and force defenses to respect the deep pass. The Indiana DB matched up on him seems to sniff out the run play right away and immediately tries to break through for the tackle. Having both DBs start in the same position but not allowing them to press doesnt give them any advantage. To learn more or opt-out, read our Cookie Policy. Perhaps most problematic, he is more of a body catcher than a hands catcher. Undersized at 510 and 199 lbs, Tate doesnt quite have the measurables of a WR1, but excels as a WR2. The breakout quarterbacks are among the Next Gen Stats analytics team's 10 players most likely to earn all-star accolades for the first time this season. [2:09] Jeffery runs right at his CB (Eli Apple), using his long arms to shove him back, then breaking inside to get open and get the catch and first down. Jeffery rewarded Cutlers trust with two 1000-yard seasons in his first 3 years in the NFL, though he hasnt been able to replicate that production since, due to repeated nagging injuries he seems to suffer every year. The Cowboys receivers may have the most talent and productivity potential of any group in the NFC East, but, with the Cowboys run-centered offense, and Dak Prescotts limited pass production (he averages 3,625 yards and 25 TDs per season in his career), this group is unlikely to put up truly big numbers in 2019. NFL passing games want quick-hitting routes rather than long developing ones downfield. The CB starts to close the distance, but cant stop JJ, who does a great job locating and tracking the ball in the air and catching it. Look how much cushion the CB opposite Reager (bottom of screen) gives him, clearly afraid of getting beat deep. [9:18] Tate lines up outside this time, fakes an out route, but then redirects to run deep and accelerate quickly while CB Anthony Browns head is turned to the QB, allowing him to get yards of separation and an easy catch that he turns into a TD. Last year, the Giants fan site, Big Blue View, published a very good series on the topic, What do scouts look for?. Panthers saddled with another odd pick in latest NFL.com mock draft. Another WR on the same boundary runs vertically to clear out the DB there, leaving Reagor with a lot of open grass in front of him as he receives the short pass. But after McLaurin, Washington didn't have many other weapons. Call 1-800-GAMBLER. Our daily series examining the NFC East from a positional perspective with the help of league personnel sources moves on to the position in which the Eagles spent the most time on in the offseason . To prepare, we at Chargers Wire are previewing players from every position. By releasing Golladay, the Giants save $6.7 million against their salary cap. 4. McLaurin also breaks his route at around the first down line, ensuring that he has a good chance of getting the first down if he makes the catch. Although he suffered from poor QB play in 2019 (40.2% of passes thrown his way were uncatchable, 3rd worst in this years draft class), he also had a terrible 9.8% drop rate, one of the highest in this years draft class. Slayton has all the athletic traits of a very good WR, but needs a lot of refinement added to his game to allow him to win when athleticism isnt enough. Diggs went from good to great following his trade from Minnesota to Buffalo in 2020. Justin Jefferson is arguably the best wide receiver in the league. The New Orleans Saints have . Odds & lines subject to change. He is also still an excellent route runner, running crisp routes with a tremendous sense of timing and anticipation of the balls arrival. First, notice that McLaurin recognizes Indiana 14 is matched up on him. The 2018 version of this article focused on players like Odell Beckham Jr., Josh Doctson, Paul Richardson, Jamison Crowder, Terrance Williams, Allen Hurns, Cole Beasley, Nelson Agholor and Mike Wallace - none of whom will be discussed in this article, just two years later. If the Redskins are going to make any noise in the division, they will need at least two of their mostly young and unheralded receivers to hit big in 2019, and they will need a quarterback either veteran Case Keenum or rookie Dwayne Haskins to be throwing the ball effectively. Cowboys: Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, CeeDee Lamb, Cedric Wilson, Simi Fehoko That top three of Cooper, Gallup and Lamb might be the best trio in the NFL. Call 1-800-GAMBLER. Of course, no position group consists of just one or two players. The NFC East has three new head coaches and a young group of quarterbacks; its probably no surprise that it has more young and promising receivers than older established veteran receivers. Then Reagor explodes off that planted left leg to go outside and uses a bit of a shove to knock the CB off balance and shoot past him. After the Giants signed Kenny Golladay, the NFC East is shaping up to be one of the most competitive divisions in 2021. He looks, to me, a lot like a poor mans Julio Jones. Even better, he displayed strong hands, winning quite a few contested catches. Otherwise, young receivers can fade away fast in this league. Cooper again lines up opposite Hughes, this time at the bottom of the screen. Jeffery lines up on the outside in a bunch formation (3 WRs all bunched up on the same side), but at the last second moves inside as if hes moving to the slot. He has enough deep speed that he can completely blow past most CBs given a few seconds to run in a straight line, though he doesnt have the lateral agility to juke a DB out of his shoes, nor does he utilize fakes to misdirect opponents and get free early. It also shows how much teams have to respect his deep-threat ability and how that opens up opportunities for short passes. Getty The Cowboys could be the perfect landing spot for Giants WR Richie James. . But the NFC North has four of the very best wideouts in football, including possibly the best wideout in the league in Adams. Goedert like the rest of the Eagles offense has been up and down but with rookie QB Jalen Hurts finally being ushered in as the starter expect the young QB to look for Goedert as a safety blanket when things are not going his way. CBS Sports Draft Analyst Chris Trapasso joined One Bills Live from the NFL Combine. Tate is rarely asked to block in the run game, but is a willing and physical blocker when put in that role. And then to grab Brown in the third round might end up being a steal. Not only did he gain an impressive number of yards after catch with his explosiveness and quick cuts, but this play seems designed around getting the ball to Reagor, whom the coaches clearly see as their teams number 1 weapon.
